Once the tire has been removed you can see the brake rotor and the brake pads within the caliper. To install new brake pads you only have to remove the brake caliper and swap out the pads. When reinstalling the brake caliper you must torque the caliper sliding bolts to 24 ft-lbs. If you need to remove the entire brake bracket for any job when you go to reinstall it make sure to torque its bolts to 100 ft-lbs.

How to change the rear brakes

The rear brakes on a Ford Explorer are disc brakes which involve the same directions as most other disc brakes including the front brakes on this vehicle. To install new brake pads you only need to remove the tire and the brake caliper. Once the caliper is off you can swap the new pads in for the old pads. When reinstalling the rear brake caliper you must torque the caliper sliding bolts to 24 ft-lbs. If you are required to remove the caliper bracket you can retorque it down to 100 ft-lbs. Also the calipers banjo bolt that holds the brake line onto the caliper torques to 26 ft-lbs.
